Consciously® First 100% Black Owned Agency Achieves B-Corp Status With a 112-Point Score

Consciously®, a 100% Black-owned agency that builds brands, campaigns and inclusive marketing platforms is now a Certified B Corporation®. This makes Consciously part of a community of leaders who drive a global movement of people using business as a force for good.

B Corp status confirms Consciously’s commitment to help companies, the people behind them, the causes that support them, and the art that inspires them to become stakeholder brands as a larger part of the communities they serve. Consciously works with conscious companies, independent brands, thoughtful locals, nonprofits, as well as businesses led by women and people of color with marketing platforms for the long term.

B Corp Certification doesn’t just happen. It’s the only certification that measures a company’s entire social and environmental performance. The B Impact Assessment evaluated how Consciously’s operations and business model impacted their workers, community, environment, and their customers. These standards are supported by transparency and accountability requirements and builds a legal structure to ensure commitment.

“When I founded Consciously in 2016 (then named CodeSwitch), it was with the idea that businesses large and small simply couldn’t keep up with their marketing needs. Rebranding the company as Consciously has enhanced our ability to do more than just provide marketing services,” says Rai-mon Barnes, founder and CEO. “Companies need help building a long-term marketing platform, not just another campaign.”

Certification is achieved with a minimum audit score of 80 out of a possible 200. Consciously achieved an impressive 112 points. The impact assessment measures the company’s impact in the areas of governance, workers, community, environment and customers. It’s important to note that the median score for an average company is only 50.9.

“Making sure our client platforms are steeped in goals, strategy and KPI objectives, remain sustainable and equitable, and are aligned with team attributes and budget constraints is what makes our B Corp certification mean so much to our team as well as our clients,” said Barnes. “There’s still lots of work to do and while our certification doesn’t make that work easier, it does assure it’s better for our stakeholders and business ecosystem at large.
